At 00:22 (Local time) of February 23rd 2020, a fireball could be observed in front of the coast of Almeria. This event could be seen from more than 500km and was registerd from the SMART Project's detectors operated at Calar Alto (Almería), Sierra Nevada (Granada), La Hita (Toledo) and Sevilla observatories.

Following the preliminary analysis carried out by Professor José María Madiedo (Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía IAA-CSIC), PI of the SMART Project, this fireball was caused by a rock impacting against the Earth atmosphere at a estimated speed of about 43.000 km/h and the initial altitude of the fireball was about 70 km above Almeria (South Spain) province. The object moved then southeastward and finished at an altitude of about 29 km above Mediterranean Sea.

February 19th 2020

This year has started with lots of fireballs surrounding the Spanish’ south skies.

During the two past night, two more bright fireballs could be registered. The one at 04:09 UT of February 18^th could only be registered with one of the surveillance webcams operated at Calar Alto Observatory in Almería. Rest of observatories having SMART Project detectors had clouds, so this fireball couldn’t be triangulated and no information could be gathered from this object.

However, the second one at 03:31 UT of February 19^th was much more impressive and was registered with the SMART Project’s detectors operated at Calar Alto (Almería), Sierra Nevada (Granada) and Sevilla observatories. And again, with the Calar Alto Observatory (Almería) south surveillance webcam.

February 11th 2020

The third in February, and the fourth in 2020. A new fireball could be registered with the SMART Project’s detectors operated at Calar Alto (Almería), La Sagra (Granada), La Hita (Toledo) and Seville observatories.

This nice object could also be registered with the west surveillance webcam at Calar Alto Observatory in Almería, more than 300 km away of this event.

And, again, this is the third that flew above West Andalusia’s skies.

February 6th 2020

It’is the third fireball that flew above Andalusian’s skies (South Spain) since this 2020 began.

This occasion, the fireball flew above Jaén province at 00:21 UT (01:21 local time) of February 6^th 2020.

The event could be registered with the SMART Project’s detector at Sevilla and La Hita (Toledo) observatories, and with the north surveillance webcam operated at Calar Alto Observatory in Almería.

February 2nd 2020

Just a few nights after the first big fireball of 2020, last January 28^th, a new meteor flew above Southwest Spain skies, and again crossing Seville and Cádiz provinces. This time its direction was southwestward and it lasts more time than the January 28^th one.

This second fireball of the year happened at 22:43 UT (23:43 local time) of January 31^st, and can be registered with SMART Project’s detectors operated at Seville and La Sagra (Granada) observatories.

In this occasion, the west SMART's detector at Calar Alto Observatory (Almería) couldn’t register it, but the west surveillance camera located at this observatory was able to record this object that could be seeing even with the bright light of the moon.
