Two nice Geminids during the nights of December 12th and 14th 2020

pathinterior14Last nights of December 12th and 14th, two nice Geminids could be registered with the SMART Project’s detectors located at Calar Alto (Almería), Sierra Nevada (Granada), La Hita (Toledo) and Seville observatories.

In fact there were a lot of Geminids during last nights. These ones are only a couple of examples of what are happening during these nights.

This two were also registered with the external surveillance webcams of Calar Alto Observatory in Almería.

Following the preliminary analysis carried out by Professor José María Madiedo (Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía IAA-CSIC), and SMART project's PI, the first Geminid on December 12th, at 21h38 UT, had a estimated speed of about 126.000 km. This couldn’t be triangulated, there is no more information about it.

However Professor José María Madiedo could establish that the second Geminid on December 14th at 22h12 UT entered in our atmosphere at a speed of about 123.000 km/h. The luminous event started at 100 km above the Gulf of Cadiz, moving then southwestward and finishing  at an altitude of 51 km above the sea.

The trajectory this second Geminid followed above the see is shown on the top-left picture, while on the top-right one the emission spectrum is clearly appreciated.

Below are the videos registered with the SMART Project’s detector and the external surveillance webcams, all of them operated at Calar Alto Observatory in Almería.

First video is the one of the Geminid on December 12th, while the other two are the December 14th  Geminid.

Calar Alto (CAHA) fireball detection station, together with the one at the Observatory of Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) and others placed at different locations in Spain, are part of the S.M.A.R.T. project led by Professor José María Madiedo (IAA) to track that kind of objects. Specifically, Calar Alto (CAHA) station and the one at Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) constitute a collaboration agreement between the IAA researcher José María Madiedo and both institutions.
