Fireball over the north of Africa on November 15th 2016

A bright fireball could be registered from Calar Alto Observatory surveillance webcams and from the fireball detection station, also located at this observatory. This object, that happened on November 15th at 23:55 local time (22:55 UT), could be also observed from La Hita Observatory. The complete analysis is still not finished.

The analysis is been carried out by Professor José María Madiedo (University of Huelva), PI of the SMART Project. Following the first preliminary analysis, the most probable origin of this object is the South Taurid meteor shower. In such case, the fireball would fly over the north of Africa. According to these data, the phenomenon would be produced by a Comet Encke fragment.

Calar Alto (CAHA) fireball detection station, together with the one at the Observatory of Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) and others placed at different locations in Spain, are part of the S.M.A.R.T. project led by Professor José María Madiedo (University of Huelva) to track that kind of objects. Specifically, Calar Alto (CAHA) station and the one at Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) constitute a collaboration agreement between Professor Madiedo and both institutions.
