A nice and bright fireball was observed at 23h54 UT on June 10th 2023 flying above the Mediterranean Sea, just in front of the coasts of Almería and Murcia provinces.
This event was registered with the SMART Project’s detectors operated at Calar Alto (Almería), La Hita (Toledo), Huelva, Sierra Nevada (Granada), La Sagra (Granada) and Seville.
Two of the external cameras located at Calar Alto Observatory in Almería, also followed this phenomena.
José María Madiedo (Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía IAA-CSIC), PI of the SMART Project, has finished the preliminary analysis with the next conclusions:
- - Type of event: cometary
- - Initial speed: 67.000 km/h
- - Initial altitude: 104 km
- - Final altitude: 74 km
As shown on the top right picture, the fireball moved northeastward above Mediterranean Sea, finishing nearly in front of the Cartagena City

Calar Alto (CAHA) fireball detection station, together with the one at the Observatory of Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) and others placed at different locations in Spain, are part of the S.M.A.R.T. project led by Professor José María Madiedo (IAA) to track that kind of objects. Specifically, Calar Alto (CAHA) station and the one at Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) constitute a collaboration agreement between the IAA researcher José María Madiedo and both institutions.
