Another nice fireball on April 23rd 2023

This month is being very good in the observation of meteors from the various detectors operated by the SMART Project in Spain.

Last detected fireball took place on the night of April 23rd 2023 at 04h10UT, and it was observed with the SMART Project detectors at Calar Alto (Almería), Huelva, La Hita (Toledo), Calar Alto, Sierra Nevada, La Sagra (Granada), Seville and Valencia del Ventoso (Badajoz).

Again, two of the external cameras operated at Calar Alto Observatory in Almería, followed also this phenomena.

pathThe preliminary analysis was carried out by the PI of the SMART Project, Professor José María Madiedo (Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía IAA-CSIC). His conclusions are the next:

  • Type of event: Cometary
  • Initial speed: 240.000 km/h
  • Initial altitude: 122 km/ (above Córdoba province)
  • Final altitude: 84 km (above Badajoz province)

Image on the right shows the path above the ground this nice fireball followed.

Below are the two videos captured with the external cameras of Calar Alto Observatory in Almería.

Calar Alto (CAHA) fireball detection station, together with the one at the Observatory of Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) and others placed at different locations in Spain, are part of the S.M.A.R.T. project led by Professor José María Madiedo (IAA) to track that kind of objects. Specifically, Calar Alto (CAHA) station and the one at Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) constitute a collaboration agreement between the IAA researcher José María Madiedo and both institutions.
