Last Saturday June 05th 2026, at 23h38 UT, a nice fireball was observed crossing the skies of Córdoba and Badajoz provinces in Southwest Spain.
The fireball was registered with the SMART Project’s detectors located at Calar Alto (Almería), La Hita (Toledo), Sierra Nevada (Granada), La Sagra (Granada), Otura (Granada), Seville, Mazagón (Huelva) and Huelva observatories.
External cameras operated at Calar Alto Observatory in Almería, also followed this event.
The conclusions after the preliminary analysis carried out by Professor José María Madiedo (IAA-CSIC) are the next:
- Event type: cometary
- Initial speed: 90.000 km/h
- Initial altitude: 102 km
- Final altitude: 58 km
Below are the two videos registered with the external cameras at Calar Alto Observatory in Almería.
Calar Alto (CAHA) fireball detection station, together with the one at the Observatory of Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) and others placed at different locations in Spain, are part of the S.M.A.R.T. project led by Professor José María Madiedo (IAA) to track that kind of objects. Specifically, Calar Alto (CAHA) station and the one at Sierra Nevada (IAA-CSIC) constitute a collaboration agreement between the IAA researcher José María Madiedo and both institutions.
