BEGIN NIGHT
This section describes how to begin an observing night.

  • To open (or reopen) your PMAS session, to create your data directories for the night, and to start initial SPEC and AG bias exposures, enter on IDL prompt :
      •          Pmas> pics_open,e,/run,/night
    and follow the instructions.
    If you have the same operator as in the previous night, type : 
               Pmas> pics_open,e,/run,/night,/same
  • Take BIAS frames.
  • Take test expose with spectral line lamp, check intensity and focus.
  • Set optimal spectrograph focus. Take full focussing series if necessary.
  • Take calibration frames.
  • Check A&G Camera focus and intensity (CALUNIT moved into beam, continuum lamp on, observe cross hair, diaphragm, or dark spot on field mirror).
  • Setup the telescope.
  • Prepare for flatfield exposures.
