The Calar Alto Computer News for 2003

 

(A) Hardware:

-        A new Sun Fire machine  (called fire35) is now running for Omega 2000 project

-        A DVD writer  and a new Scanner have been installed on our general user PC

-        New fibre optics lines to the observer room at laboratory prepared

-        New switch connected at 1Gbps at the observer room at laboratory

-        TVG monitor from 2.2 prepared and working on the observer room at laboratory

-        Tests with wireless network on both personnel flats and laboratory

-        Anonymous ftp area increased from 30Gb up to 145Gb

-        Increased storage space on some instrumentation machines with 145Gb disks

-        In preparation are several webcams for telescope monitoring. One of them is already working at the 2.2m Telescope.

 (B) Software:

-        Secure area and webmail (squirrelmail) installed on our web server

-        Secure pop3. No more insecured pop3 connection from outside

-        Updated Apache Server and compiled with mod_ssl

-        Lots of security patches on Unix+Windows machines

-        Started some works concerning changes for starting some processes and services on Linux servers instead of Solaris servers. These future services will probably run on Linux boxes: Postfix (instead of Sendmail), Webmail (Squirrelmail), SSL, POP3 (with SSL), IMAP, CUPS (for serving printer queues), Web Server (apache), PHP

-        Updated our DHCP Server ( see DHCP and our Private Network ) to Linux SuSE 9.0 (and patched)

-        Togegher with Electronic Group (Mr. Mueller) and Astronomy Group (Mr. Thiele) the new Dome Control program (DOMEC) has been developed for controlling the 2.2m Telescope Dome remotely.

-        Works concerning Extinction Monitor, including Web Page , have been finished. Also, some new features were added and some bugs were fixed on the Hut Control program.
