The Calar Alto Computer News for 2000

(Period from January to June 2000)

 

(A) Hardware:

- The Calar Alto Network has been inproved with the addition of 3 Giga Switches. Now 2.2, 3.5 and Laboratory are connected with a 1 Gb. bandwidth. 1.23 is connected with a bandwidth of 100.

- Laboratory has now a more distributed network as we have used the old 100 Mb. switches. Now the net is split into several pieces allowing more bandwidth for end users

- Jobs for allowing about 10 modems for remote PPP connections has been started. This will allow in a near future people from their rooms to connect to the network

 

(B) Software:

- New version of IRAF for solving problems with the Y2K effect. Now the Bug Free version working at Calar Alto is v.2.11.3

- StarOffice 5.1 suite installed for general use on the network

- Secure Shell (ssh) installed (Ralph Tremmel)

- Accounts obs1a, obs1b, obs2a, obs2b, obs3a and obs3b have been unified, protecting configuration files.

- A new Data Base for the Night Reports has been built on the system. Now all night reports are being stored and can be consulted any time.

- Meteorological data has been inserted on the Epics1. This is not totally finished, but in a near future, all weather data can be included on the Fits header

- NTP (Network Time Protocol) has been installed on all instrumentation machines (ultra1, ultra2 and ultra3) so now all three are syncronized with an NTP server.

- ds9 installed It is Saotng 1.9.3 with a nice TCL/TK GUI.

 

(C) Personnel:

- We have a new coleage on the Computer group. Ricardo Hernández started up on the 29th of May and will cover the area of Instrumentation Software
