Calar Alto Computer  News for 2004

1. Hardware

  • The TP cabling at 3.5 has been reorganized totally
  • Installed new wireless system at Hotel Hall
  • New Main Server Room
  • The above is completed with a totally new TP cabling at Laboratory, reducing the number of switched needed at that building. Anyway, the job couldn't be totally finished, but it will early next year
  • New room for other important computers. On that room we included the hardware for both the Extinction monitor and the Fish Eye projects
  • Webcams for 2.2m telescope are already working. Please, note these cameras only can be seeing from inside our network
  • Webcams for 3.5m in progress
  •  Sound from 2.2m to SOR (Service Observing Room at Laboratory) is now working
  • Two new Thin Clients at the library replaced the old x-terminals
  • New PC for scanning and/or DVD re-writer. This PC can be found on the same new room where the Extinction monitor lives, just in front of the Laboratory library (the last room on the corridor)
  • Together of the improvement of the Almería's Office Network (having now a fast 4Mbps ADSL access), two firewalls have been installed: one at Calar Alto (the main one) and other at the Office. Also new IP addressing for our DMZ is already working. Communication between Office and Calar Alto is achieved now through IPSec
  • DHCP computer moved into a better system

2. Software

  • Lots of security patches in both Unix/Windows systems
  • New Linux Server computer giving access to the new Linux Network. This is serving also NIS, NFS and file application access for Linux Clients. It serves also CUPS printer queues for both Linux and Windows systems. The Linux environment is working much in the same way as the Solaris environment
  • Also, the Linux Server is now our new DNS server. This new system accepts queries about our internal network too
  • The complete  mail system has been moved from Solaris into Linux. Now all services related with mail are running on the new Linux Server. This include secure pop and imap, spamassassin, anti-virus engine, majordomo... Some of those services are totally new, and were not included on the previous mail server (sendmail on Solaris). Our webmail system is also integrated with the new mail system
  • Although in a test phase, a new machine is working already as the first Linux Client, giving the possibility of working with Linux instead of Solaris. Anyway this is not a powerful computer, and it will be replaced in the future. This computer is a Linux NIS/NFS client, and can run midas, iraf, and all sort of Astronomical applications that live on the Linux Server. The working scheme is very similar to that under Solaris environment
  • In progress, Anonymous ftp moving from Solaris into Linux
  • New NTP working under Linux
